SUMMARY:Artist Talk and Seed Ball Workshop with Cannupa Hanska Luger
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Museum of Natural and Cultural History to hear from artist Cannupa Hanska Luger for an exploration of his multidisciplinary artwork and the processes behind it. From 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.\, Luger will lead a drop-in workshop where participants can make native seed bombs for ecological restoration projects around Oregon. These seed bombs will be used to help seed several of our restoration sites including Thurston Hills Natural Area and Elijah Bristow State Park. \nFeatured Artist: Cannupa Hanska Luger \nThe Museum of Natural and Cultural History welcomes artist Cannupa Hanska Luger for a series of events exploring Indigeneity in the twenty-first century. Raised on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota\, Luger is a New Mexico-based\, multi-disciplinary artist of Mandan\, Hidatsa\, Arikara\, Lakota\, Austrian\, and Norwegian descent. SUMMARY:Join the conversation on trails in your watershed!
DESCRIPTION:A committee has been formed to facilitate an update of the 2008 Oakridge/Westfir Community Trails Plan. The Plan is now ten years old and the time has come to create a plan for the next decade. The Trails Plan is an important document that helps the Middle Fork Ranger District make trail planning decisions and recommendations for project funding with public input. The plan also helps the Forest Service understand the needs and desires of the trail-user community in regard to the Middle Fork Ranger District trail system. The scope of the new Trails Plan will include the entire Middle Fork Ranger District and possibly connections to other Ranger Districts and Forests along the boundary. A link to download the 2008 Oakridge/Westfir Community Trails Plan can be found here. \nThe Middle Fork Willamette Trails Plan Steering Committee would like to invite you to attend a public meeting on either Wednesday\, October 17th upstairs at the Grower’s Market at 454 Willamette St\, Eugene\, OR 97401\, 6:30pm-8pm (parking is available on the street or in a parking garage on 7th and Willamette) or Thursday\, October 25th at the Middle Fork Ranger District office at 46375 Highway 58\, Westfir\, OR 97492\, 6:30pm-8pm. \nAt the meetings\, you will be asked to provide input on what changes (if any) you think could be made to the Middle Fork Ranger District trail system\, trail heads and other trail-related facilities. You will be able to hear other people’s ideas and submit your own on a map/chart format or in writing. Points to consider before the meeting: \n\nThe Middle Fork Ranger District manages 580 miles of trail on 750\,000 acres of National Forest land.\nLocal trails are popular with mountain bikers\, equestrians\, hikers\, and other users.\nThe Ranger District does not have the capacity\, even with volunteer assistance\, to maintain all of the trails that people want to access in a given year. Thinking about what can be let go will be helpful along with the understanding that we cannot justify building new trails and facilities without a plan to sustain those public assets into the future.\nThe Middle Fork Ranger District has been implementing small trail connection projects as needs arise\, but they need public input to guide those efforts going forward.\n\nVERY IMPORTANT: Please put middleforkwillamettetrailsplan@gmail.com in your email contacts. All future emails about this effort will come from that Gmail address. Putting this address in your contacts will allow you to receive email announcements and progress updates without those messages being sent to your spam folder. If you are not able to attend a public meeting\, feel free to send your thoughts by email. If you don’t want to receive email from this planning process\, please use the link above to notify us by email with “unsubscribe” in the subject line. \nPlease consider attending the meeting closest to you and come prepared with ideas to help with the new Trails Plan. It is your trail system; this may be your best chance to make your voice heard! Even if you are not planning to attend\, please share this message with people and organizations that might have a stake in the work we are doing.

SUMMARY:Forest Fire in Oregon with James Johnston
DESCRIPTION:Fire is returning to wildlands of Oregon after a long absence. James Johnston will discuss current research about the historical extent of fire in Oregon\, the future of wildfire in Oregon\, and public lands management that will help Oregonians live with fire. \nJames is a Faculty Research Associate at OSU College of Forestry. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Oregon and a masters and PhD in Forest Science from Oregon State University. His research interests include fire ecology\, dendroecology\, restoration forestry\, environmental law and policy\, and collaborative governance. The Many Rivers Group has been participating with the Southern Willamette Forest Collaborative for the last several years. The collaborative’s current exciting project is the restoration of the 100\,000-acre Rigdon between Oakridge and Willamette Pass. James Johnston is the leading resource on fire for the projects. James’ long research in the Cascade Forests is a wonderful resource for our decision making. \nCome and hear James’ unique perspective of fire on the forest landscape. Doors will open at 6:30PM.

SUMMARY:Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council Science Pub
DESCRIPTION:On March 27th\, the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council (CFWWC) welcomes Jenny Laxton\, Mt. Pisgah Arboretum Education Manager\, for our March 2018 Science Pub presentation entitled Slimy Creatures. This presentation will explore slugs\, snails\, worms and more! They might be a bit goopy\, sometimes drippy and high on your personal yuck factor scale\, but these underappreciated little critters are more fascinating than you’ve ever imagined. Break out your inner kid and examine our local slime creators with fresh eyes. Lions\, tigers and bears have nothing on the weird and wacky world of these charismatic critters. \nJenny Laxton has been teaching kids and adults about the outdoors for 15 years. She has an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Oregon and currently works as the Education Manager at Mount Pisgah Arboretum. She grew up in Oregon and enjoys helping people forge a greater connection to their small part of the world. She agrees with her 2 and 4-year old that the gross things in life are the most fun. \nThe CFWWC hosts a family-friendly monthly public meeting series called the Coast Fork Science Pub on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 5-7pm at the Axe & Fiddle\, 657 E. Main Street in Cottage Grove. The event begins with informal socializing\, trivia\, and updates about the watershed and watershed council during the first hour. The Science Pub presentation begins at 6pm. CFWWC receives 10% of all sales from the evening between 5-7:30pm. The event is free to the public\, with a $5 donation suggested. SUMMARY:MFWWC Science Pub - Floodplain Restoration: The Story of Staley Creek & Board Elections
DESCRIPTION:Rivers and streams are dynamic environments that are constantly changing. Or at least they should be. For the last 50 years\, lower Staley Creek was static – confined to constructed berms that kept it channelized and didn’t allow water to flow out onto the floodplain. Thanks to a grant from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board and Western Native Trout Initiative\, as well as funding from the US Forest Service\, we were able to restore a one mile section of lower Staley to a more natural condition\, creating diverse habitat that will benefit fish and wildlife species and increase water storage. \nJoin our Restoration Projects Manager\, and her partners at the US Forest service (Hydrologist\, Lisa Kurian\, and Fish Biologist\, Matt Helstab) us as they share the story of why this project was needed\, what this partnership means for the river\, and how it will affect the overall health of the watershed. Come early and stay late as Hilltop has generously offered to donate 10% of all proceeds between 6pm and 9pm to the Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council. \n\nThis event is free to the public with a $5 suggested donation.\n\nPlease note: we will be holding this event on the back patio of Hilltop. It is covered and has heaters but please dress for the weather!\n\nThis event will also be our annual board elections. You are an eligible voting members if you have attended a meeting or event in the last 6 months.  So if you have attended the Floodplain Science Pub in Oakridge\, Mushrooms of the Middle Fork\, or the Dorris Ranch Planting Celebration you are eligible. Or if you have attended any of the Board of Directors meetings themselves you are also eligible to vote. Check out our candidates on our website and we will see at the science pub!

SUMMARY:Dorris Ranch Community Planting Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us and help put the finishing touches on our oak woodland restoration project at Dorris Ranch.  Together with Willamalane we have worked to release the oak woodland\, and now we need your help to give it a little love. These native plants will help attract pollinators\, provide key habitat for native birds and wildlife\, and reduce erosion on the open slopes. Your help will ensure that our work is successful and lasts well into the future. \nCome for the restoration\, stay for the celebration!  After getting our hands dirty planting we will gather at the Dorris Ranch barn for snacks and drinks to celebrate the watershed\, our volunteers\, and all the great work we have accomplished this year.  Drinks will be provided by Plank Town Brewing and Mountain Rose Herbs. \nCome help us finish restoring this woodland that we all love so much! \nPlease click here to register or email gale@mfwwc.org with questions.
