SUMMARY:Science Pub - Coal Creek Floodplain Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Rivers and streams are dynamic environments that are constantly changing. Or at least they should be. For the last 50 years\, Coal Creek was static – confined to constructed berms that kept it channelized and didn’t allow water to flow out onto the floodplain. This summer we will be restoring a 20 acre section of Coal Creek to a more natural condition\, creating diverse habitat that will benefit fish and wildlife species and increase water storage. \n\nPlease join the US Forest Service Middle Fork Ranger District and the Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council on Tuesday\, May 21st\, from 6-8PM for a family-friendly presentation about the work we will be undertaking this summer. Learn about general floodplain science\, what “restoration-in-action” looks like\, why we are undertaking this project\, how we expect the stream to change in the future\, and what this means for overall watershed health in the Middle Fork Willamette watershed basin. Sign-in\, order some food or drink and meet our staff from 6-6:30PM. The presentation will begin promptly thereafter. $5 suggested donation at the door. All are welcome! Questions? Give us a call at 458-215-8200 or email contact@middleforkwillamette.org.

SUMMARY:Fall Creek Wildflower Hike
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is now closed as we have reached our registration limit. Please email contact@middleforkwillamette.org if you would like to be added to a wait list. Thanks! \nJoin us for an exclusive opportunity to learn from a local wildflower expert on her own property! We will be touring the property of Tanya Harvey as she guides us through the native plants that she has seeded throughout her property. Tanya\, and her husband Jim\, have lived on this land for 25 years and have dedicated a significant amount of their time and money to restore their property. We worked with them to help restore their oak woodland and savanna habitat through a grant from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board.  Tanya and Jim also recently enrolled their property in the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program which will provide technical assistance and access to restoration tools for years to come. \nTanya is an artist\, designer\, and plant lover who has been in love with plants for as long as she can remember. Her knowledge of local plants is as deep as her love for them and we are excited to be able to share this with you. Join us in exploring this unique property and seeing all the diverse habitats that it offers. Find out more about Tanya on her websites westerncascades.com and tanyaharveydesign.com.

SUMMARY:Community Ivy Pull at Thurston Hills
DESCRIPTION:Despite the weather\, our weather is still on for this Saturday! Please see below for some updates about the conditions for the trail and what to expect in your volunteer role. \nJoin us for a rewarding day clearing out invasive species at Thurston Hills Natural Area. This is a community wide collaborative effort with our friends from Willamalane Park and Recreation District. \nFeel free to bring your friends\, kids and anyone else that would like to take an active part in supporting the removal of this invasive species and protect the trees in this newly developed property. \nAfter the community Ivy Pull we’ll be celebrating with good food and drinks to commemorate our hard work! \nPlease register here and sign the electronic waivers. \n\nA few things to note in the safety conversation: \n\nThere is fairly deep snow off of the trail (on the trail it’s a couple of inches) which makes it difficult to identify hazards under your foot. Use caution when walking off the trail into snow as you won’t be able to see downed limbs and debris and it could be slippery and icy.\n\n\nThe snow is slippery and in places there is ice where the snow has been compacted and refroze- be sure of your footing.\n\n\nWe have caution taped off areas where there are visible hanging limbs or hazards\, but volunteers should be aware that there may be snow or other hanging hazards that we weren’t able to identify and make sure they look up and are in a safe work zone.\n\n\nPotential poison oak mingled in with some Ivy on the edges of the project area.\n\nPlease note that we will be out in the elements so please dress warmly for your volunteer efforts as well as wear comfortable and durable boots if you have them or shoes you are okay to be in snow with. If you feel as though this volunteer commitment is not the best for your comfort level\, we understand. Please let me know as soon as you are able if you are needing to cancel you volunteer commitment. \nAs promised before\, we will have warm delicious pizza from Track Town following our Ivy Pull along with great drinks from Plank Town and water for our volunteers that are not of age. \nThank you so much to all that have signed up and we look forward to working with you all on Saturday morning!

SUMMARY:Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council Floodplain Science Pub
DESCRIPTION:Join the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council for a talk with Jared Weybright\, McKenzie Watershed Council (MWC) Executive Director\, about the Lower South Fork McKenzie River Floodplain Enhancement Project Phase I. \nMuch like other rivers throughout the Pacific Northwest\, the South Fork McKenzie River has been dramatically altered by a variety of historic and present-day land use management practices. The installation of Cougar Dam\, placement of berms and levees throughout the floodplain\, removal of instream wood\, and timber harvest from floodplain forests altered a number of physical\, chemical and biological process that historically created complex and diverse habitat across the board alluvial valley found in the lower South Fork. In 2018\, the US Forest Service\, in partnership with the McKenzie Watershed Council\, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife\, and US Army Corps of Engineers implemented Phase I of the Lower South Fork McKenzie River Floodplain Enhancement Project. The Project utilized a relatively new approach (“Stage 0”) to floodplain restoration that seeks to maximize floodplain connection at all flow conditions by removing artificially placed sediments (i.e. berms\, historic roadbeds\, etc.)\, using that material to aggrade incised channels\, and placing large wood through the floodplain. The presentation will describe the Project’s design approach and highlight the implementation process. \nJared Weybright has worked with the McKenzie Watershed Council since 2004\, the majority of that time (10+ years) spent directing restoration and education programs. He has designed and implemented numerous voluntary education and restoration projects in partnership with private landowners\, public agencies\, schools\, and nonprofits organizations. Jared has a background in fisheries and previously worked for ODFW. Mr. Weybright lives in Eugene with his family and enjoys coaching youth sports and a variety of outdoor pursuits.

SUMMARY:Join the conversation on trails in your watershed!
DESCRIPTION:A committee has been formed to facilitate an update of the 2008 Oakridge/Westfir Community Trails Plan. The Plan is now ten years old and the time has come to create a plan for the next decade. The Trails Plan is an important document that helps the Middle Fork Ranger District make trail planning decisions and recommendations for project funding with public input. The plan also helps the Forest Service understand the needs and desires of the trail-user community in regard to the Middle Fork Ranger District trail system. The scope of the new Trails Plan will include the entire Middle Fork Ranger District and possibly connections to other Ranger Districts and Forests along the boundary. A link to download the 2008 Oakridge/Westfir Community Trails Plan can be found here. \nThe Middle Fork Willamette Trails Plan Steering Committee would like to invite you to attend a public meeting on either Wednesday\, October 17th upstairs at the Grower’s Market at 454 Willamette St\, Eugene\, OR 97401\, 6:30pm-8pm (parking is available on the street or in a parking garage on 7th and Willamette) or Thursday\, October 25th at the Middle Fork Ranger District office at 46375 Highway 58\, Westfir\, OR 97492\, 6:30pm-8pm. \nAt the meetings\, you will be asked to provide input on what changes (if any) you think could be made to the Middle Fork Ranger District trail system\, trail heads and other trail-related facilities. You will be able to hear other people’s ideas and submit your own on a map/chart format or in writing. Points to consider before the meeting: \n\nThe Middle Fork Ranger District manages 580 miles of trail on 750\,000 acres of National Forest land.\nLocal trails are popular with mountain bikers\, equestrians\, hikers\, and other users.\nThe Ranger District does not have the capacity\, even with volunteer assistance\, to maintain all of the trails that people want to access in a given year. Thinking about what can be let go will be helpful along with the understanding that we cannot justify building new trails and facilities without a plan to sustain those public assets into the future.\nThe Middle Fork Ranger District has been implementing small trail connection projects as needs arise\, but they need public input to guide those efforts going forward.\n\nVERY IMPORTANT: Please put middleforkwillamettetrailsplan@gmail.com in your email contacts. All future emails about this effort will come from that Gmail address. Putting this address in your contacts will allow you to receive email announcements and progress updates without those messages being sent to your spam folder. If you are not able to attend a public meeting\, feel free to send your thoughts by email. If you don’t want to receive email from this planning process\, please use the link above to notify us by email with “unsubscribe” in the subject line. \nPlease consider attending the meeting closest to you and come prepared with ideas to help with the new Trails Plan. It is your trail system; this may be your best chance to make your voice heard! Even if you are not planning to attend\, please share this message with people and organizations that might have a stake in the work we are doing.
