SUMMARY:MFWWC Science Pub - Floodplain Restoration: The Story of Staley Creek & Board Elections
DESCRIPTION:Rivers and streams are dynamic environments that are constantly changing. Or at least they should be. For the last 50 years\, lower Staley Creek was static – confined to constructed berms that kept it channelized and didn’t allow water to flow out onto the floodplain. Thanks to a grant from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board and Western Native Trout Initiative\, as well as funding from the US Forest Service\, we were able to restore a one mile section of lower Staley to a more natural condition\, creating diverse habitat that will benefit fish and wildlife species and increase water storage. \nJoin our Restoration Projects Manager\, and her partners at the US Forest service (Hydrologist\, Lisa Kurian\, and Fish Biologist\, Matt Helstab) us as they share the story of why this project was needed\, what this partnership means for the river\, and how it will affect the overall health of the watershed. Come early and stay late as Hilltop has generously offered to donate 10% of all proceeds between 6pm and 9pm to the Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council. \n\nThis event is free to the public with a $5 suggested donation.\n\nPlease note: we will be holding this event on the back patio of Hilltop. It is covered and has heaters but please dress for the weather!\n\nThis event will also be our annual board elections. You are an eligible voting members if you have attended a meeting or event in the last 6 months.  So if you have attended the Floodplain Science Pub in Oakridge\, Mushrooms of the Middle Fork\, or the Dorris Ranch Planting Celebration you are eligible. SUMMARY:Dorris Ranch Community Planting Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us and help put the finishing touches on our oak woodland restoration project at Dorris Ranch.  Together with Willamalane we have worked to release the oak woodland\, and now we need your help to give it a little love. We will be planting native shrubs and wildflowers that are adapted to areas with more sunlight\, just like the newly restored woodland! These native plants will help attract pollinators\, provide key habitat for native birds and wildlife\, and reduce erosion on the open slopes. Your help will ensure that our work is successful and lasts well into the future. \nCome for the restoration\, stay for the celebration!  After getting our hands dirty planting we will gather at the Dorris Ranch barn for snacks and drinks to celebrate the watershed\, our volunteers\, and all the great work we have accomplished this year.  Drinks will be provided by Plank Town Brewing and Mountain Rose Herbs. \nCome help us finish restoring this woodland that we all love so much! \nPlease click here to register or email gale@mfwwc.org with questions.

SUMMARY:Friends of Buford Park Willamette Confluence Preserve Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Friends of Buford Park on a walking tour of the Willamette Confluence. The Willamette Confluence features extensive habitats that are endangered in the Willamette Valley and includes six miles of river corridor\, floodplain forest\, wetlands\, upland oak woodlands and native prairie. The Conservancy is working with partners to reconnect the river to its historic floodplain across 20 ponds in this former gravel mining site. During this 4 mile mostly flat walking tour\, volunteer docents will lead you around the Middle part of the preserve\, highlighting the conservation efforts\, human history\, and natural wonders.

SUMMARY:Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah Turtle Flats Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends’ of Buford Park Executive Director Chris Orsinger for a morning tour of Turtle Flats\, a 62 acre floodplain where the Coast Fork and Middle Fork of the Willamette River come together. The Friends recently purchased and are in the process of restoring the area. Come see the old gravel ponds which now are home to river otter\, western pond turtles\, and waterfowl and the willow wetlands where migratory songbirds flock.Turtle Flats is extremely important because it connects two key parcels that provide conservation and recreation benefits to our community – Glassbar Island\, owned by Oregon State Parks\, and Willamette Confluence Preserve\, owned by The Nature Conservancy. You’ll learn about the cooperative efforts of the Friends and these two organizations to transform their adjoining parcels into a vibrant community amenity where fish and wildlife thrive and where people can enjoy nature.The pace of this tour will be leisurely. However\, to enjoy this tour\, you must be able to walk comfortably over old gravel roads for approximately 2 miles and stand on your feet for 3 hours. As a reminder\, no pets are allowed on the tour.

DESCRIPTION:Please join Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council and USFS Botanist\, Molly Juillerat\, for our annual Mushrooms of the Middle Fork foray! Learn how to find and identify typical northwest edibles\, pick up a mushroom permit\, and have fun meeting other enthusiasts in your area. We’ll meet at the Middle Fork Ranger District Office on Hwy. 58 for a brief presentation before heading out for a mushroom collection hiking tour on surrounding trails. We’ll separate and ID our finds back at the ranger station and break for a mushroom-themed potluck – so feel free to bring your favorite mushroom dish\, dessert or hors d’oeuvre to share! What to bring: We’re expecting cooler temperatures and possibly rain. Please dress in layers\, bring rain gear and wear sturdy shoes for hiking. Please carry water and a sack lunch or snacks to enjoy trailside. \nDue to limited space\, REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. SUMMARY:2017 Great Willamette Clean Up on the Middle Fork
DESCRIPTION:Oakridge river lovers unite! The Middle Fork Watershed Council will be leading an effort to clean up Salmon Creek and the Middle Fork starting at the Greenwaters Park Pavillion where participants will split up into groups to clean pre-designated sites in Greenwaters\, Salmon Creek and other areas along the Middle Fork. This cleanup will be led in collaboration with the US Forest Service\, Greater Oakridge Area Trail Stewards and the City of Oakridge. Please wear sturdy close-toed shoes\, dress for the weather\, and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. Gloves\, garbage bags and tools provided by Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council. \n\n\nAfterwards\, you may choose to carpool from Greenwaters Park to Eugene at noon for the Volunteer Thank You Party\, 1:00 – 3:00PM at the Ninkasi Tasting Room Patio at 272 Van Buren St. in Eugene. Oakridge Mayor\, Jim Coey\, will be making an address in support of the river. Free lunch by Track Town Pizza\, beverages by Ninkasi and Mountain Rose Herbs\, Ice Cream by Red Wagon Creamery\, music\, raffle and more! Learn about general floodplain science\, what “restoration-in-action” looks like\, why this project took place\, how we expect the stream to change in the future\, and what this means for overall watershed health in the Middle Fork Willamette watershed basin. Sign-in\, order some food and drink and meet and greet from 6-6:30PM.
